Dean Bouzianis Obituary

Dean D. Bouzianis, 93, husband of the late Ruth H. Bouzianis of Haverhill, MA., passed away peacefully at his home, Monday May 13th, 2019.
Born in 1926 in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Demetrios and Angeliki Bouzianis of Haverhill.
Dean’s life was characterized by high personal achievement and service to others.
He attended Haverhill Public Schools and after high school he entered WWII and enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. Dean served two years in the Pacific Theatre.
After the war he attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1951. In 1952 he received his Masters Degree in Music Composition and in 1987, received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree, both from Boston University.
He was Awarded the Caleb Dustin Hunking Scholarship by the City of Haverhill and studied Byzantine Music at the National Conservatory of Greece in Pireaus. He was the first American graduate of the Conservatory.
His professional career revolved around his passion for music and teaching.
He taught music at the collegiate level at several institutions, including the Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, MA, Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, and ended his career at the College of Music at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
His gift as a classical singer was shared with others through numerous solo performances throughout New England and New York City and at Yale University before the late King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece.
He also served as a choir director at several area churches and was the co-founder and conductor of the Whittier Chamber Orchestra and The Pentucket Choral Society, both of which performed for over 30 years for the enjoyment of music lovers in the Greater Merrimack Valley.
He was a member of the PI KAPPA LAMDA National Music Honor Society.
He Co-Chaired the Educational Sub-committee of the Human Relations Committee for the City of Haverhill from 1969-71.
He was the founder and two-term President of the Winnekenni Foundation that was created to restore and preserve the Winnekenni Castle, a venue that still flourishes to this day for the enjoyment of all in the region.
He is survived by his son James and his wife Melissa of North Hampton NH, his daughter Elizabeth George and her husband Kenneth of Newmarket, NH, and his son Mark of Newfields, NH. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Gita Beach, Iris Litterio, Ruth George, Thomas George, Katherine Bouzianis, Matthew Bouzianis, Nicholas Bouzianis, Stephen Bouzianis, Anastasia George and Michael Bouzianis. He also leaves two great granddaughters, Vivian Litterio and Abigail Beach and a great grandson Jonathan Beach and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Ruth, Dean was predeceased by his sister Pauline Tsoumas of Jamaica Plain, MA.

Dean will lie in state on, Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at  the Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church, 156 Winter Street, Haverhill MA., 01830.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Friday May 17th at the Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church with burial to follow at the Linwood Cemetery in Haverhill.
