Mercedes Martinez, age 75, died peacefully early Monday morning February 22nd at Carney Hospital, after a brief illness. She fought courageously until the very end. She was the beloved wife of Carlos Martinez, Sr. of Lawrence, whom she shared 45 years of marriage.
Mercedes Martinez was born on August 20th, 1945 in San Miguel El Salvador, to mother Edelmira Escobar. At the young age of 21, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to make a better life for herself and her family. She worked as a secretary at Boston Edison, where she worked for more than 5 years. When her younger children were born, she was a stay at home mom and housewife. She later worked for VNA in Lynn, Massachusetts, for more than 10 years. She loved the clients she had and formed a strong bond with them.
Mercedes was a great wife, loving mother and grandmother. At her prime, she was a social, active woman who was deeply involved in her local church. She enjoyed socializing with her friends and family, traveling, and knitting. She also loved going to the casino and getting her weekly scratch tickets. Her family and friends will always remember her as a fun loving, caring, and feisty woman. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mercedes is also survived by her son Julio Escobar and wife Carmen Escobar of Methuen, her son Carlos Martinez, Jr. of Lawrence, and her daughter Vanessa Madruga and husband Michael Madruga of Dracut. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Mercedes, Kerrie, and Maria Escobar of Lynn and Jacob and Lola Madruga of Dracut. She leaves behind many other family members locally and in El Salvador.
A wake will be held at 133 Lawrence St, Lawrence, MA on Thursday, February 25th between 4-8 pm. A funeral is scheduled for Friday on February 26th, 2021, at Farrah’s Funeral Home. The family would like to thank Holy Family Hospital for their great help and care they extended to Mercedes.
